Connecting with educators and trainers, liaising over legislation, marketing our profession to communities, councils and governments. But, most importantly guiding our profession into the future and beyond, capturing and moulding technologies, and changing environments that involve the Cadastre.
BACKGROUND
All registered Licensed Surveyors in SA were invited to attend. 73 licensed Surveyors and graduates registered with 8 apologies. Enthusiastic contributions were made to the general discussions of the evening.
Key topic that were aired included:
- Fees charged for Cadastral work
- Public perception of the work of a Licensed Surveyor
- More sources of Cadastral work are required
- Core work for a Licensed Surveyor should be Cadastral work
- Competition amongst Licensed Surveyors is frustrating and confusing to the public
- Land Division competition from outside the profession is challenging the role of the Licensed Surveyor
- Licensed Surveyors must look to the future
- What suggestion would you make toward improving the Community perception of the Licensed Surveyor and the Profession?
- Would you support the development of a Fee Structure Schedule (such as the Victoria example) that is supported by the profession when quoting and charging for your services?
- Would you support a Business Case Study that would detail a Surveying Practice’s operating costs and income structure?
- Would you mentor a surveying student or Registered Surveying Graduate in support of providing succession planning to the profession into the future?
- Would you volunteer to work on a sub-committee with the objectives to expand on the above and work towards developing strategies that benefit the Profession’s profile within the community?
- Do you feel that Legislative changes to the Survey Act 1992 are required to make provision for the technological challenges facing the profession?
The findings of the Forum were presented to the Surveyors Board of SA.

Damian Brogden
Director - Events & Programme Coordinator
Damian is a director of Sawley Lock O’Callaghan and has been in private practice for 35 years. He has previously represented surveyors on various surveying and spatial business associations and is currently on the board of the Australian Consulting Surveyors Insurance Society (ACSIS Ltd). He looks forward to continuing this important work with CSSA.

Director
Brenton has been a Licensed Surveyor since 2005 and has been employed with Steed Surveyors ever since.
Curtis Janke
Director - Prism Surveys
Curtis is a Licensed Surveyor and Director of Prism Surveys, based in Adelaide. Originally from Queensland, he has broad experience across cadastral, engineering, and land development projects. He is passionate about supporting the sustainability of small surveying firms and strengthening professional standards across South Australia’s surveying industry.
Michael Lock
President
Michael is Sole Trader practising as Lock Surveys and has been a Licensed Surveyor since 1986. He has previously been involved with surveying business associations and is keen to make the CSSA website informative to both the public and its members.
Chris Millett
Treasurer
Chris is a director of Fyfe and has been in private practice for 40 years. He has previously represented surveyors on various surveying associations and is currently treasurer for CSSA. He is keen to assist the survey industry in South Australia.
Kevin Petrilli
Director - Membership & Sponsorship
After a number of years in private practice, Kevin settled for a sole trader practice, operating as kpSurveys. Through his experience working with the larger firms in this state, he knows how important it is to work as a team.
